Nicole Bresser: How does UNDRIP law look on the ground?
What’s happening in BC right now to make UNDRIP real from staff level up to the legislation. Nicole ‘Niki’ Bresser is of Swampy Cree and Red River Métis descent. As a lawyer and deputy supervisor of the Indigenous Legal Relations Solicitor Unit, Niki provides legal advice on Aboriginal law, supervises lawyers and professional staff, and champions reconciliation initiatives in all aspects of her work. Her participation at the Champion’s Table, a committee focused on the implementation of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and as co-chair of the BC Law Society’s Truth and Reconciliation Advisory Committee, are instrumental in leading reconciliation efforts within the province.
Joelle Walker: What’s happening in the courts?
Joelle appeared as counsel in the Gitxaala v British Columbia (Chief Gold Commissioner) appeal for First Nation Leadership Council and BCCLA. She will provide insights on the Gitxaala appeal and on the recent Kebaowek First Nation v Canadian Nuclear Laboratories Federal Court decision. Joelle leads the Miller Titerle and Co. Litigation and Dispute Resolution Group. She focuses on complex civil litigation, representing the interests of businesses and Indigenous organizations.
Anne-Marie Guedon: What’s happening at home in the NWT and where are we headed now? Anne-Marie will highlight the similarities and differences from other jurisdictions and the NWT approach to Indigenous Government collaboration. Anne-Marie’s unit in Executive and Indigenous Affairs has the lead in supporting the implementation of UNDRIP by the GNWT, and her team helped develop the NWT United Nations Declaration on the Right of Indigenous Peoples Implementation Act. She has a Masters in Governance and Entrepreneurship in Indigenous and Northern Areas from UIT the Arctic University of Norway in Trumso and is currently pursuing an LLM in Constitutional Law at Osgoode Law School.
