If you are an inactive member or a member who has resigned, you may apply to be an active member.
Please note that membership fees cannot be prorated.
Reactivating your Membership
You may apply online to the Society, under Rule 53, to change your status to that of an active member.
Please note that the Executive may require an applicant to pass such bar admission examinations as may be established under section 38 where:
- the applicant has not previously been admitted as an active member and was granted a waiver of the requirement to take bar admission examinations before being admitted as an inactive member; or
- the applicant is shown on the Record as having been an inactive member for more than three years prior to the day the application is received by the Secretary.
Following subrule 53(2), you will need to provide the following application package that includes:
- Application in Form R
- If you are a member of another provincial or territorial law society or comparable body: a certificate from each provincial or territorial law society or comparable body of which you are a member dated not earlier than 30 days prior to the presentation of the application stating
- that you are in good standing,
- the period of time during which you have been listed as an active member in the society or body,
- whether disciplinary proceedings are pending against you, and
- the nature and disposition of any disciplinary action that has been taken against you;
- Either:
- Payment of the insurance levy or, where you are exempt under subsection 93(4) of the Society Rules, proof that you are
- covered by errors and omissions insurance referred to in paragraph 93(4)(a) of the Society Rules; or
- exempt under paragraph 93(4)(b) of the Society Rules;

You will also need to pay (please refer to the Fees Chart)
- the assurance fund levy; and
- the fee for a change of status to an active member.
Reinstating after Resignation
You may apply online to the Society, under Rule 53, to change your status to that of an active member.
Please note that the Executive may require an applicant to pass such bar admission examinations as may be established under section 38 where:
- the applicant has not been an active member of the Society or the governing society or body of another province or territory for more than two years prior to the day the application is received by the Secretary
Following subrule 59.1(2), you will need to provide the following application package that includes:
- Application in Form R
- Two letters of good character:
- from members in good standing of a provincial or territorial law society or a comparable body of which the applicant is or was a member; or
- from judges of a provincial, territorial or superior court of the jurisdiction of the law society or body of which the applicant is or was a member, or
- such other evidence of good character as the Secretary considers satisfactory;

STEP 5: SAVE AS "READY TO PUBLISH" WHEN YOU WISH TO SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION
Your application will be directed to the Membership and Admission Committee for recommendation before being sent to the Executive for approval.
The reactivation/reinstatement takes effect on the date the application is approved by the Executive or upon a later date requested by the member and approved by the Executive.
Standard of Service
Receipt - Applicants will receive a confirmation of receipt within three (3) working days, which could include a request to provide any outstanding information or materials.
Courtesy follow-ups for outstanding paperwork and/or information - Applicants will receive two (2) follow-up emails within a period of four (4) weeks before closing the application file.
The Membership and Admission Committee (MAC) will examine an application and provide a recommendation to the Executive Committee within fifteen (15) working days, assuming no further information is required from the applicant.
The Executive Committee will consider the MAC’s recommendation and provide their decision to approve (or not) the application for admission within ten (10) working days, assuming no further information is required from the applicant.
